For those that came to tailgate and cheer on the Browns this Sunday, thankfully the bratwurst were not the only thing to celebrate! A big thanks to Jim for providing and cooking the brats and dogs.
To start the game, Mike Pettine’s defense came out swinging looking much more comfortable than we saw them in week 1 quickly clearing the field for the Johnny Manziel led offense. Manziel didn’t disappoint throwing deep on 2nd and 8 to Travis Benjamin for a 65 yard TD that caused George’s to erupt in fist pumping, dog barking celebratory madness. Manziel’s throw marked the the first opening possession touchdown pass since the Browns vs Giants in 2012. Perhaps the tides were turning?
The momentum continued throughout the half with the defense forcing three fumbles, several sacks, and a plethora of costly Titans penalties. A beautiful catch by Terrance West near the end of the first quarter and a well timed punt return by Benjamin gave the Browns a 21-0 lead going into the locker room. The last time the team lead 21-0 at the half was way back in 1994 against the Seahawks. We were overdue to say the least.
By halftime Cleveland’s harshest critics, and some fans, had to be asking “Are we really watching the Browns?” and “Where did this kid come from?”
Despite a slow start to the second half Manziel showed maturity in picking his moments and after a 3rd connection with Benjamin it was clear that we had something good going. The defense also rallied late throwing the Titans offense off their game just when it looked like they might mount a comeback.
Overall the team played like a well oiled machine and Manziel, who once seemed like just another mistake by the lake, quickly rose to the top of the class. The question for Browns fans everywhere is can he stay there?
Congratulations Browns on our first W of the season, final score 28-14!
